Deciphering the Palaeocene-Eocene thermal maximum by Granger causality test

چکیده
The Palaeocene-Eocene thermal maximum is a global warming period (∼56 Ma), which marked by sharp negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) that caused the injection of massive isotopically-light into ocean-atmosphere. It generally considered warming. However, several studies have suggested and environmental perturbations precede onset CIE. Here we present Granger test to investigate detailed mechanisms this event. We show shift from climate-warming driving carbon-emission scenario scheme in carbon-injection causing global-warming during initial emission might be methane hydrates dissociation and/or permafrost thawing, possibly linked with astronomical paced This change causal direction may result feedback emitted additional other sources, such as volcanism, bolide impact, oxidation marine organic matter, wildfires burning peatlands.

An abyssal carbonate compensation depth overshoot in the aftermath of the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum
1 The PETM represents one of the largest and most abrupt greenhouse warming events in Earth’s history. Marine and terrestrial records document a global >2.5‰ negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE; refs 1–3) coincident with global mean surface ocean warming of >4 °C (ref. 4) and geochemical and sedimentological evidence for ocean acidification5,6. Collectively, these lines of evidence suggest a...
متن کاملMagnetotactic bacterial response to Antarctic dust supply during the Palaeocene–Eocene thermal maximum
Distinct magnetic properties of marine sediments that record the Palaeocene–Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) have been suggested to be due to a bacterial magnetofossil signal that is linked to enhanced weathering conditions during the PETM. We document the dominance of bacterial magnetite in deep-sea sediments from southern Kerguelen Plateau (Ocean Drilling Program Hole 738C, southern magnetofossi...
متن کاملSensitivity of the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum climate to cloud properties.
The Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a significant global warming event in the Earth's history (approx. 55 Ma). The cause for this warming event has been linked to increases in greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide and methane. This rapid warming took place in the presence of the existing Early Eocene warm climate. Given that projected business-as-usual levels of atmospheric...
متن کاملCarbon dioxide forcing alone insufficient to explain Palaeocene--Eocene Thermal Maximum warming
The Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (about 55 Myr ago) represents a possible analogue for the future and thus may provide insight into climate system sensitivity and feedbacks1,2. The key feature of this event is the release of a large mass of 13C-depleted carbon into the carbon reservoirs at the Earth’s surface, although the source remains an open issue3,4. Concurrently, global surface tempe...
متن کاملSurrogate-based test for Granger causality
A novel approach for testing the presence of Granger causality between two time series is proposed. The residue of the destination signal after self-prediction is computed, after which a crossprediction of the source signal over this residue is examined. In the absence of causality, there should be no cross-predictive power, due to which the performance of the cross-prediction system can be use...
